Nintendo Announces Launch Date, Details for Wii U Console

Nintendo has finally shed some light not only on what we can expect from the launch of their new Wii U console, but also some details we did not know about. However, despite this new information, there are still details which remain to be addressed.

One of the foremost questions on everyone’s mind regarding the Wii U is “when?”, and the answer is Sunday, November 18th, 2012. The other big question is that of price, and that one is just slightly less straightforward.

If you choose to opt for the Basic Set, you’ll get a white Wii U console with matching GamePad, 8 GB of internal storage, sensor bar, HDMI cable, and AC adapters for the console and GamePad for $299.99. If you instead go with the $349.99 Deluxe Set, you’ll receive a black Wii U console with matching GamePad, a copy of Nintendo Land, 32 GB of internal storage, a console stand, a GamePad charging cradle, and a stand that allows users to place the GamePad vertically on a table, plus everything else available in the Basic Set.

Accessories included in the Deluxe Set will also be sold separately, though prices have not been named. Similarly, Nintendo will not be including Wii Remote Pluses or Nunchuk controllers in the packages, as they feel that they have sold in great enough numbers with the Wii to be unnecessary due to their compatibility. However, in the instance that you do need to purchase these items, they will also be sold with the Wii U branding at retail, presumably at the same price they currently go for.

As for the Pro Controller, no price or release date has been given yet.

“The wait is almost over — in just 66 days, Wii U will arrive with the strongest lineup of launch software in Nintendo history,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, Nintendo of America’s President and COO during the press conference in New York City. “With the integrated second screen of the included GamePad and features that instantly enhance the way people play games, watch video and interact with each other, consumers will see how Wii U delivers a completely unique experience and a remarkable value right out of the box. The new system also creates extraordinary new possibilities for game developers, bound only by the limits of their imaginations.”

More information about other elements of the Wii U are still to come, so stay tuned.
