Ubisoft Acquires THQ Montreal & South Park: The Stick of Truth

thqmontrealApologies for the lateness on this one, but with THQ’s recent financial difficulties reaching critical mass, the company was recently forced to auction off several of its franchises and development teams. Included in this was THQ Montreal, which was purchased by Ubisoft.

“In addition to the team at THQ Montreal, Ubisoft also acquired a new, yet-to-be announced IP in development at the studio,” read the press statement issued by Ubisoft. “THQ Montreal will join Ubisoft’s development teams, already the second-largest in-house development staff in the world with 26 studios in 19 countries and more than 6,250 people dedicated to video game production.”

“This deal adds experienced developers to our internal creative teams at a key moment in the cycle of the video game industry,” said Yannis Mallat, president of Ubisoft Montreal.

In addition to the THQ Montreal team, Ubisoft also revealed that they picked up the rights from THQ to publish South Park: The Stick of Truth, a role-playing game based on the popular Comedy Central animated series which airs on the Comedy Network here in Canada. Developed by Obsidian Entertainment, who are known for their work on Fallout: New Vegas, the game remains scheduled for a release sometime in 2013.
