Over 35,000 Wii Minis Sold in Canada
In fact, about 35,700 you liked and purchased the Wii Mini between December 7th, 2012 and January 31st, 2013, according to Nintendo World Report. Nintendo of Canada’s Communications Manager, Matt Ryan, notes that the “Canadian market has reacted positively to the great value the system has to offer, and we are seeing this reflected in the sales numbers.”
Though the device lacks compatibility with SD cards, GameCube games and accessories, or online capabilities, there is apparently still a market for the device among those who may have no need for such amenities. This could include those who simply want to get their Wii Sports on, or younger children (such as my own niece, who received one for Christmas) who get it as their first console. Plus, some simply like the attractive red Wii Remote Plus and Nunchuk controller, and find this a more affordable alternative to acquiring a more expensive red Wii console.
The Wii Mini was exclusive to Canada, but has recently been announced for a European release on March 22nd for £80. So far, there has been no word on a U.S. release, and Ryan went so far as to note that Canada’s sales numbers play no role in other regions determining whether or not to release it in their territories.
