The Nintendo Download – 6/6/13

We’re used to seeing the Nintendo 3DS get the lion’s share of the attention around here, but not this week! With the exception of the cross-retail/eShop release of Animal Crossing: New Leaf, this week’s Nintendo Download is all Wii U, all the time… except for one Wii Virtual Console title, which you can also play on the Wii U.

This week’s headliner is the 1992 NES puzzle game Yoshi, which will be 30 cents on the Wii U eShop for a limited time when it comes out on June 12th. If you’re not already familiar with it by now, the goal is to match pairs of falling Mario baddies to eliminate them, or catch a whole batch between two halves of a Yoshi egg shell to hatch one of three differently-sized Yoshis. What an egg-citing way to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Famicom!

Yoshi isn’t alone; preceding his arrival (meaning you can download it now) for $4.99 is Tozai Games’ NES classic Spelunker. The eponymous spelunker may have a low threshold for pain, but he makes up for it with a high threshold for adventure as he moves through the underground. Dodging scalding steam vents, poisonous bats, and the angry spirits of those who tried and failed before him, it is Spelunker’s mission to find the hidden underground pyramid and claim the treasures which lie within.

At midnight on June 9th, it will be time to return to the land of Animal Crossing in Animal Crossing: New Leaf. In addition to the usual round of Animal Crossing fun, you get to take charge as the new mayor of your humble berg!

Until 9am PST on June 27th, you can download Trine 2: Director’s Cut for the discounted price of $9.99 in the Wii U eShop. This side-scrolling action game features physics based puzzles to be solved by your control over fire, water, gravity, and magic. Master using them, and you can fend off the wicked goblins who have overrun this once idyllic fairy tale land.

Avengers, assemble! The Wii U launch title Marvel Avengers: Battle for Earth is now available in the Wii U eShop for $29.99. With 20 Marvel characters to choose from, it’s up to you to take the battle to the invading Skrulls and thwart their Secret Invasion!

Finally, there is Sengoku 3 for the Wii Virtual Console. First released in 2001, this side-scrolling action game sees you take control of one of four characters as you set off across the world to slay the evil spirits awoken by the red moon. A new ninja/shinobi gauge allows you to launch new ninja attacks upon your enemies, even chaining together armed and unarmed moves together to increase your fighting power.

And that’s everything for this week! Just click the corresponding links above for more screens, video, and information on each of this week’s downloadable titles.
