The Nintendo Download – 6/26/2014

Shovel Knight, Castlevania III, Wii Sports Club, and a whole lot more.

Holy moly, there are a lot of Nintendo eShop releases this week. There’s no time to waste, so let’s get right into it!

Shovel Knight for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS – The long-awaited, Kickstarter-backed, retro-style project from Yacht Club Games is finally here! As the game’s hero, Shovel Knight, you’ll wield your mighty Shovel Blade as you embark on a journey to free the land from the evil Enchantress and her Order of No Quarter! The Wii U version features special Miiverse features, whereas the Nintendo 3DS version employs StreetPass for an exclusive Battle Arena.

I’m currently reviewing this for Nintendo Force, but without giving too much away, let me just say this: If you’re the sort of person who checks these updates in the hopes that a new NES, Super NES, or similarly oldschool game will be released on a given week, you really must play this.

Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS – Many years before Simon Belmont picked up the whip known as the Vampire Killer and waged a one-man war against the forces of Dracula, his ancestor, Trevor, teamed up with a group of like-minded individuals to challenge the evil count through 17 levels filled with monsters of every shape and size. Joining him are Sypha Belnades, the spellcaster who controls both ice and flame; Grant DaNasty, a dagger-wielding pirate who can climb walls with the same ease as the rigging on his ship; and Alucard, the fan-favorite son of Dracula himself, whose fireball casting and transformative powers allow players a sense of… oh, who am I kidding? Everyone goes with either the pirate or the mage. Though this was Alucard’s first appearance in the series, he didn’t exactly impress anyone in it.

That notwithstanding, this is considered one of the better (but also most challenging) games in the series, following more in the footsteps of Castlevania than its sequel.

48 hour Wii Sports Club free trial for Wii U – As of 6pm PT, a free 48 hour trial for the now-complete five-game compilation known as Wii Sports Club begins! Enjoy updated, high-definition versions of the games which helped make the original Wii a household name, including golf, tennis, baseball, bowling, and boxing! What’s more, you don’t have to partake in this right away– the offer is good until 11:59 p.m. PT on December 31, 2014. Mind, you only get 48 hours during that period to play from the time game play is initiated, so be sure you’re ready to make the most of it once it begins!

BrickBlast U! for Wii U – “The future of Pong is here,” with 14 levels of power-ups, electronic music, and presumably blasting bricks.

Monkey Pirates for Wii U – It’s monkeys! It’s pirates! What more do you need? Take control of one of the four monkey captains’ boats as you fight over seas based on the Arctic, Caribbean, Egypt, and China.

My Arctic Farm for Wii U – Speaking of the arctic, here’s a farming-style game which takes place there, giving you a single little penguin to start, and allowing you to expand your frigid farmland to include up to ten different animals, including polar bears.

Yes, I know: Penguins are from the antarctic, not the arctic. Someone ought to tell the developers that, but it’s not going to be me; I like both penguins and polar bears too much to fuss over it.

My Jurassic Farm for Wii U – Same as above, but with less arctic, penguins, and polar bears and more dinosaurs, starting with a single Compsognathus.

Cocoro – Line Defender for Nintendo 3DS – This is a strategy line defender game which puts more emphasis on backstory than telling you what the gameplay is about. Islands, gods, elements, entities… fun stuff, I’m sure.

Hidden Expedition Titanic for Nintendo 3DS – You’re out to solve 14 missions across 17 locations as you solve the mysteries of the sunken ship Titanic. Can you find the lost crown?

Plain Video Poker for Nintendo 3DS – A dozen no-frills casino-quality poker games. Reminds me of a machine in a pool hall on a back road in the U.S.

Quell Reflect – Demo Version for Nintendo 3DS – This logic puzzle game came out back in February, but now you can try it for free!

SKYPEACE for Nintendo 3DS – Choose between a male and a female character, then take off on your rocket-powered sky surfboard to collect coins, avoid enemies, and rack up a high score.

Toy Stunt Bike for Nintendo 3DS – Sixty levels of stunt racing across various household levels await you as you compete for worldwide leaderboard glory, or at least the most awesome crash (seriously, “amazing crashes” is a bullet point on the list of features).

Anne’s Doll Studio: Antique Collection, Anne’s Doll Studio: Lolita Collection, and Anne’s Doll Studio: Princess Collection for Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo DSiWare – Three titles which appear to be the same in every way except the theme of the dolls. Make and decorate dolls in one of three themes, and use the SD card to store pictures of your creation.

Anonymous Notes Chapter 4: From the Abyss for Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo DSiWare – An endless dungeon awaits you in this action role playing game. Just when you think you’ve conquered the boss, the dungeon recreates itself for you to try again!

Mysterious Stars: The Samurai for Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo DSiWare – Connect the stars, la lalala… sorry. The God of the Stars is getting old and needs your assistance in helping those in need, this time including a samurai who no longer has a master (a ronin, in other words).
