The Nintendo Download – 12/25/2014

Mario, Mario, Mario, Duck Hunt, and Shantae.

Wow! This Christmas Day edition of the Nintendo Download is short, but ever so sweet. Three, count ’em, three Mario titles, as well as Duck Hunt and Shantae! That’s a tough combination to beat, and there are some nifty sales going on, too.

Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse for Wii U – You might remember this one from its Nintendo 3DS release a short time back, but now it’s available for the Wii U in Shantae’s home console debut! The now-powerless genie Shantae teams up with her pirate rival, Risky Boots, in order to save Sequin Land from a curse, but can Shantae learn the ways of the pirates to save the day? You can check out a trailer for this release here.

Duck Hunt for Wii U – When many a child in the late 1980s opened their very own Nintendo Entertainment System on Christmas morning, they found it came packed with two games on one cartridge: Super Mario Bros. and Duck Hunt. Now Zapper action comes to the Virtual Console for the first time (though this particular title was used to tease the service at E3 prior to the release of the Wii) with this NES classic.

With your Wii Remote in hand, you can take on the challenge of shooting down either one (controlled by a second player, if you choose) or two ducks at a time, lest you face the laughter of your very own canine hunting companion. A third mode does away with the ducks and the dog alike as you take to the shooting range and try your luck with some clay pigeons.

Mario Party Advance for Wii U – Party World’s mini-games and Professor E. Gadd’s Gaddgets have been scattered around Shroom City, thanks to some mischief from Bowser. Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Yoshi move around the board, completing special challenges and helping locals solve their problems as they try to set things right.

Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2 for Wii U – Though Super Mario World is already available on the Wii U Virtual Console, you’ll find some tweaks and twists to set this version apart, such as a playable Luigi who has a higher leap and bouncier fireballs, but more slippery traction! Of course, an update of the arcade classic Mario Bros. is included as well. You can check out a trailer for the game here.

Spy Chameleon for Wii U – Five missions are spread across 75 levels as you use your special chameleon talents, such as camouflage, to best enemies and complete the various tasks at hand.

Toon Tanks for Wii U – 80 levels, four worlds, and six enemy types await as you take on this variation of the classic top-down shooting game.

PUZZLEBOX setup for Nintendo 3DS – A unique game in which you hold the Nintendo 3DS upside-down, allowing you to manipulate pieces on the bottom– er, top screen before setting them to fall to the screen below.

Super Mario Bros. Deluxe for Nintendo 3DS – The other game to come with the NES alongside Duck Hunt, this is the original Super Mario Bros., and so much more! The original 1985 classic is here in all its Game Boy Color glory, and once you’ve conquered its 32 levels, you can move on to new challenges such as collecting red coins, Yoshi eggs, or taking on the challenge of several worlds for Super Players from The Lost Levels.
