Silver Mario amiibo Comes to Canada

You’ve gone for the gold, now stick around for silver.

silvermarioboxA month after the release of the Gold Mario amiibo figure, Nintendo of Canada has announced that the rumored Silver Edition is now officially on its way.

Their Facebook post is light on the details — just that it will be available on May 29, 2015. Unlike the Gold Edition, this appears to be the same date slated for the United States.

Whereas the Gold Edition was a Walmart exclusive in the States, Canada faced no such issues. This time around, it appears no one in either country needs to worry about retail exclusivity — issues of scarcity aside, you should theoretically be able to get one anywhere amiibo figures are sold, including Amazon.ca.

The Silver Edition Mario is compatible with all the same games that the other Mario amiibo figures (that’s Mario the character, not Mario the franchise, mind) are, including Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, as well as Mario Party 10 (review coming soon). While the functionality is largely the same, some have said that the Gold — and presumably the Silver as well — versions will actually allow you to use that color when utilized in Mario Party 10.

While the Gold Edition did a good job of reflecting Mario’s new power-up from New Super Mario Bros. 2, fans of that title might remember that it was actually Luigi who would turn silver at the touch of a Gold Flower. Fortunately, for the fans who care about such things, this figure at least appears largely faithful to the “Metal” version which debuted in Super Mario 64 and has gone on to appear as something of a separate character in his own right in various Super Smash Bros., Mario Kart, and other Mario titles.
