The Nintendo Download – 6/30/2016

An old great, some new greats… so much this week is looking great!

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars for Wii U – The original — and still hailed by many as the best — Mario role playing game, it’s business as usual in the Mushroom Kingdom until a mysterious giant sword comes crashing down on Bowser’s Keep, flinging the king of the Koopas, Princess Peach, and Mario across the four corners of the kingdom. It’s up to you (as Mario, of course) to reunite the group against a common foe and expel this threat to the land!

What’s more, if a friend has the demo as well, you can both team up to hunt some monsters down!

The Battle Cats POP! for Nintendo 3DS – Tower defense gets weird as you recruit a variety of bizarre cats to take out your unusual enemies and claim treasure across the world!

Wow, now this is what I call a delightful Nintendo Download, even though it’s only two releases in particular that have my eye.

StarTropics for Wii UStarTropics is one of my favorite games from the Nintendo Entertainment System library: I love the graphics, the music, the characters, the tropical setting, the mix of threats both mystic and alien alike. The only problem is, I’ve never completed it because this game is really tough! (And not especially forgiving, either.) Fortunately, I think the Wii U Virtual Console’s Restore Points may just make things palatable enough for me to give guiding Mike Jones and the Sub-C through the many island secrets to find his missing uncle.

Zoda’s Revenge: StarTropics II for Wii U – Maybe once I finish StarTropics, I can finally give its sequel (and its improved gameplay mechanics) a look as well! Unlike its predecessor, though, Mike’s adventures instead take him through history as he meets famous figures and fights off Zoda in order to collect the Tetrads and unlock their secret.

Fun Fact: To this day, neither StarTropics or Zoda’s Revenge: StarTropics II have been released in Japan. Probably why getting Mike Jones into Super Smash Bros. seems pretty unlikely — but under the Southern Cross, anything is possible!

WiiU_RynnsAdventureTroubleintheEnchantedForest_screen_03

Rynn’s Adventure: Trouble in the Enchanted Forest for Wii U – An evil wizard has kidnapped the king and queen as marauding reptiles invade the Forest! As the spry young Fox, Rynn, can you fight your way to the wizard and free your parents?

Dragon Fantasy: The Black Tome of Ice for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS – By pirate ship and through frozen tundra, defend against enemies as you use spatially aware Area-of-Effect attacks and power moves against the demons and bosses who threaten the world of Dragon Fantasy!

Infinite Dunamis for Nintendo 3DS – In this role-playing game, a young engineer named Luke comes to the aid of a young woman who is under attack, only to discover she is half-machine. He offers to help her, kicking off a chain of events he may never forget.

New DLC

Fire Emblem Fates – New DLC Map III: The Changing Tide – In this third part of “Heirs of Fate,” it’s up to Shiro’s band to seize an opportunity. This pack goes for $1.99 USD. (I know this was posted last week. Strangely enough, this is what was in the press release; I’m not sure if it didn’t get released last week, or they just forgot to update this week’s.)

Fire Emblem Fates – Map Pack 2 DLC – Other versions of the Hoshidan and Nohrian children from other dimensions are under attack. These fledgling warriors of the Deeprealms are now forced to save themselves and their parents by rising up and discovering the mystery of their adversaries. Your leveled-up units from the main Fire Emblem Fates: Birthright and Fire Emblem Fates: Conquest games are unable to lend their assistance in this six-map series, which you can receive as they are released for $7.99 USD.

Nothing especially huge has dropped this week — unless you count the absolutely enormous world of Xenoblade Chronicles — but there are two cool-looking free-to-play games available to try out this week. At that price, anything is worth a shot at least once, right?

Lost Reavers for Wii U – From Ancient Ruins and Medieval Castles to a Modern City, this free-to-play four-player co-op game is all about teamwork as you each pull together as one of four unique characters to retrieve treasures and return them to your extraction point.

The Deer God for Wii U – Oh deer! This side-scrolling adventure is all about survival, reincarnation, and karma as you find power-ups, test your platforming skills, and unlock secrets most ancient as you must live and survive as a deer.

Xenoblade Chronicles for Wii U – Shulk’s original adventure returns once again! Funny how after it took so long to get here, Nintendo of America is quickly re-releasing it in short order along with its sequel, huh? See where it all began with this Virtual Console re-release of the original Wii title!

Mini Mario & Friends: amiibo Challenge for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS – This freebie has been out in the States for a month through a promotion we northern folks never got to partake in, but now everyone can download this free title and conquer 50 levels using the special abilities of 11 Minis. All you need to get started is any one amiibo figure!

disneyartacademy

Disney Art Academy pre-purchase for Nintendo 3DS – You can’t start learning to draw with Disney until May 13th (well, you can, but not with this title until it’s released), but you can pre-purchase it now and have it ready to go when the clock ticks down and the game is made available.

SEGA 3D Classics Collection for Nintendo 3DS – SEGA’s collection of 3D Classics is finally here! From previously-released titles such as 3D Sonic the Hedgehog to never-before-seen-in-this-part-of-the-world titles like 3D Power Drift, there is plenty to see here.

ASH for Nintendo 3DS – This turn-based role-playing game’s story is cast with an air of uncertainty as the royal army is deployed in absence of a king, leaving its leader to wonder the true intentions of the Magistrate.

It’s a small batch this week, but a pretty packed one. In addition to the return of Star Fox, Mario is ready to party, and there’s even free pinball and solitaire/horse racing! What more could you ask for?

(Don’t answer that, it was purely rhetorical.)

WiiU_StarFoxZero_gameplay_03

Star Fox Zero for Wii U – Available Friday, April 22nd: In this reboot of the Star Fox team’s original adventure, you’ll have to master new ways to pilot the sleek Arwing and its new all-terrain Walker formation, the mighty Landmaster tank (now with hover conversion), and the hovering Gyrowing flight drone in order to stop Andross’s armies from invading Corneria and conquering the Lylat system!

WiiU_StarFoxGuard_gameplay_02

Star Fox Guard for Wii U – Available Friday, April 22nd: Star Fox team member Slippy Toad’s uncle Grippy is in the mining business, and as the founder of Corneria Precious Metals Ltd., he needs your help! Man a dozen turret-mounted cameras across each facility and keep the invading robots at bay!

Unlike the retail version of Star Fox Zero, it and Star Fox Guard are sold separately in the Nintendo eShop. However, purchasing one game allows you a $9.99 CAD discount on the other, bringing the total price for both to $64.99 CAD. (Edit: Whoops, my mistake — looks like the two together are $74.99 CAD.)

WiiU_MarioPartyDS_gameplay_06

Mario Party DS for Wii U – Bowser has shrunken Mario and seven of his friends down to pocket-size! Pick one and take control in four game modes as you triumph in 70 mini-games across five game boards to foil the Koopa King’s latest scheme!

Blockara for Wii U – It’s a competition that happens only once every 12,000 years as the September Dragon awakens to grant one wish to the best alchemist in the land. Are your puzzle skills sufficient enough to claim the prize? Choose from ten characters, each with their own story, and find out!

WiiU_Dreamals_gameplay_02

Dreamals for Wii U – Three animals have been summoned to the Dream World, and are now searching for a way home. Each can move in only one direction, so teamwork is the key in this puzzle/strategy game.

WiiU_PinballArcade_gameplay_01

Pinball Arcade for Wii U – Touted as “the most realistic and comprehensive pinball game ever created,” this free download will soon see updates featuring tables based on various hit movies, TV shows, and more, including Star Trek: The Next Generation, Terminator 2: Judgement Day, Twilight Zone, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Monster Bash, Medieval Madness, Funhouse, Attack from Mars, Circus Voltaire, and Big Shot. Plus, online tournaments and extra modes will allow you to challenge yourself and compete against your friends.

Not a whole lot to speak of this week, though a compilation package with some of Nintendo’s earliest classics (and their remakes) is now available on the Wii U:

Hm, the Nintendo Download feels a little slim this week; there aren’t any headlining Nintendo 3DS releases (only one, in fact), no Nintendo 3DS themes, and even the sales feel fewer than normal, while the Activity promoted is U.S. only. Maybe it’s due to the release of Miitomo happening today as well? Yet even that isn’t mentioned here. Go figure.

Lovely Planet for Wii U – You’re on a quest to reach Lovely Planet, and to get there, you’ve got to make use of speed-boosting boots, infinite ammo, and the ability to jump more than twice your own height. No sweat, right?

You can save 15 percent off the purchase of this game until May 5th, 2016, provided you downloaded the demo during the Nindies@Home promotion.

WiiU_PokkenTournament_gameplay_01

Pokkén Tournament – Demo Version for Wii U – Not sure if the world of Pokémon fisticuffs is right for you? Find out with this free demo!

MarioSuperSluggersScreen

Mario Super Sluggers for Wii U – If you missed this title on the Wii, now’s your chance to swing for the fences and steal some bases. WiiU_6HandVideoPoker

6-Hand Video Poker for Wii U – “Multiple hands, unlimited play, a realistic pay-table, and a moving Las Vegas theme” are what this release has stakes in.

ChroniclesTeddyHarmonyExidus

It’s a cavalcade of classic Nintendo characters in the Nintendo Download this week, ranging from the land of Hyrule to Donkey Kong Island to the Mushroom Kingdom to Yoshi’s Island to Eagleland! And Shantae is here, too!

HyruleWarriorsLegends_01

Hyrule Warriors Legends for Nintendo 3DS – This port of the Wii U classic features new characters from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, new heroes such as the crossbow-wielding Linkle, new story mode chapters, and more! Plus, if you purchase the “Legends of Hyrule Season Pass” for downloadable content, you’ll be able to use Ganondorf from The Wind Waker immediately and download the additional packs as they become available throughout the year.

Just be careful about downloading this if you don’t have a New Nintendo 3DS; I’ve heard various reports that say it doesn’t run very well on the non-New models.

New3DS_VC_DonkeyKongCountry

Donkey Kong Country for Nintendo 3DS – The beast is back on the New Nintendo 3DS! Join DK and his sidekick Diddy on their first adventure to stop the Kremlings from stealing DK’s coveted banana horde!

New3DS_SuperMarioKart

Super Mario Kart for Nintendo 3DS – The one that started it all hits the New Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console, and brings what I personally believe to be the best Battle Mode in the series with it.

New3DS_VC_Earthbound

Earthbound for Nintendo 3DS – The cult classic role playing game from the Super Nintendo Entertainment System library lands on the New Nintendo 3DS at last! Join Ness and his friends in this adventure to stop the evil Giygas from destroying the world!

JapaneseRailSim3DJourneyinSuburbs1Vol2

for Nintendo 3DS – Enjoy a scenic journey through the Gifu prefecture as you use simple controls to guide a train from Minoshi Station to Minami Kariyasu Station.

JapaneseRailSim3DJourneyinSuburbs1Vol3

Japanese Rail Sim 3D Journey in Suburbs #1 Vol. 3 for Nintendo 3DS – In the third volume of the series, you’ll drive the distance from Minami Kariyasu Station to Yamada Station through the center of the Japanese archipelago.

JapaneseRailSim3DJourneyinSuburbs1Vol4

Japanese Rail Sim 3D Journey in Suburbs #1 Vol. 4 for Nintendo 3DS – The fourth volume of the series takes players on a scenic journey from Yamada Station through Gifu prefecture to Hokuno Station.

N3DS_WitchAndHero2

Witch & Hero 2 for Nintendo 3DS – Take control of both the spell-casting witch and the dauntless knight once again — at the same time! Work in tandem to defeat your foes; just know that while the knight cannot be slain, the game is over should the witch meet her end!

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut for Wii U – The most popular game in WayForward’s Shantae series has been revamped to include high definition illustrations, a new Warp System, a Magic Mode Costume, and rebalanced gameplay.

WiiU_VC_YoshisStory_03

Yoshi’s Story for Wii U – An underrated gem from the Nintendo 64 library, in my opinion. It may not be much for full retail price, but as a downloadable Virtual Console game, Yoshi’s Story is good. Join a group of differently-colored newborn Yoshis as they pursue Baby Bowser following his theft of the Happy Tree.

Infinity Runner for Wii U – This new entry in the running genre places you on board the largest spaceship ever made, the Infinity, as you flee for your life from the last of the werewolves.

New DLC

Fire Emblem Fates – New DLC Map – Hidden Truths (1 and 2) – Two new maps which serve as a prologue to the games are now available for $4.49 USD, or you can purchase Map Pack 1 to get everything released through April 21st for less than you’d pay individually.

Nintendo eShop Sales (Taken directly from Nintendo’s press release; prices in USD)

Activities

Mini Mario & Friends amiibo Challenge – Between March 25th and April 27th, purchase any amiibo from a participating retailer to gain an early access code that will allow you to play the latest Mini Mario game on your Nintendo 3DS or Wii U for free. Just tap any amiibo figure to get started!

National StreetPass Weekend: Spring Edition – From March 25th to 27th, get up to six StreetPass tags from across North America by stopping at a Nintendo Zone location with your system from the Nintendo 3DS family (i.e. Nintendo 3DS, Nintendo 2DS, Nintendo 3DS XL, New Nintendo 3DS, New Nintendo 3DS XL).

On the go or on the couch, Nintendo has two big titles lined up. Plus, a pair of retro classics on Wii U’s Virtual Console and a sequel to an indie darling, to boot. It’s looking like a good week from here.

WiiU_PokkenTournament_gameplay_01

Pokkén Tournament for Wii U – Available March 18th: Enough with the turn-based stuff, these Pokemon are ready to throw down with fighting game fisticuffs. With the Super Smash Bros. roster packed to the gills, however, what are they to do? Start their own tournament, Tekken-style, of course!

WiiU_VC_DigDugII_gameplay_04

DIG DUG II for Wii U – Dig Dug is taking a break from his side-scrolling adventures and going on a top-down island vacation. Too bad the swarms of Pooka and Fygar won’t allow him to rest! Inflate them to the point of bursting, or dig some clever traps to ensnare them!

WiiU_VC_CityConnection_gameplay_02

City Connection for Wii U – You’re out to make your mark on the world by painting the roadways around the globe by driving over them. Unfortunately, the cops aren’t too keen on your activities and are giving chase. Can you paint all the roads while making a clean getaway?

Bird Mania Party for Wii U – Up to five players can compete for the best score as you soar past bushes, treetops, and stinging bees. Collect points and unlock achievements to the pumping music, or bring a friend along for co-op play!

WiiU_UHost_02

U Host for Wii U – Get together up to four friends or teams and create your own game show! Choose from more than 1,000 questions across ten categories, or create your own custom categories and questions that can add a personal touch to an upcoming event! All this, and mini-games, too!

WiiU_MutantMuddsSuperChallenge_01

Mutant Mudds Super Challenge for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS – Max is back for a bigger challenge than any he’s ever faced! Purchase the game on one console and cross-buy will allow you to get it on the other. What’s more, the Loyalty Discount will save you 15 percent if you own the original Mutant Mudds or downloaded the Nindies@Home Preview version of this title.

N3DS_MarioSonic2016RioOlympics_gameplay_01

Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games for Nintendo 3DS – Available March 18th: It’s time to train for the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro! As your Mii, join Mario and Sonic in their separate Adventure Mode stories and take part in 14 events, including BMX, 110m Hurdles, golf, and soccer! (On a personal note, I always prefer the portables for their Adventure Modes, so this is the version I’m most interested in.)
