The Nintendo Download – 1/28/2016

This week’s selection of titles is nothing short of utterly fascinating, as we have two Final Fantasy spin-offs, Marvel’s mightiest superheroes (at home an on the go), and is that a riff on Five Nights at Freddy’s I see?

Final Fantasy Explorers for Nintendo 3DS – What do you get when you cross Final Fantasy with Monster Hunter? From what I’m told, you get Final Fantasy Explorers. Master more than 20 jobs, each with their own unique abilities, summon the power of eidolons like Ifrit and Bahamut, and use the Trance ability to take on the form of some of Final Fantasy‘s greatest heroes.

N3DS_HelloKittyMagicApron_01

Hello Kitty’s Magic Apron for Nintendo 3DS – Do you smell what Hello Kitty is cookin’? If not, now you can with this rhythm-based mini-game collection. Plus, you can create your own Hello Kitty-themed photos, too!

N3DS_RV-7MyDrone_03

RV-7 My Drone for Nintendo 3DS – This simulation puts you in control of an RV-7 military-grade drone as you use it to do everything from running supplies and conducting rescue missions to engaging in combat with other drones.

N3DS_TheMagicHammer_02

The Magic Hammer – Demo Version for Nintendo 3DS – Not sure if it’s the right time for Hammer time? Check out this demo to make certain.

DSiWare_CrazyTrain_02

Crazy Train for Nintendo DSiWare – It’s up to you to keep the trains running on time — and getting where they need to go — in this puzzle strategy game. Story mode gives you four courses to run, while Challenge mode brings it with ever-increasing difficulty.

LEGO Marvel’s Avengers for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS – “Avengers, assemble!” This LEGO game based on the Marvel Comics superheroes is available for both Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, and you can learn more about it here.

Shadow Puppeteer for Wii U – You and a friend must manipulate the light and control both a boy and his shadow to solve the puzzles necessary to find the evil shadow puppeteer.

WiiU_FINALFANTASYTacticsAdvance_06

Final Fantasy Tactics Advance for Wii U – This classic Game Boy Advance strategy role playing game has you lead Marche and his clan against the foes from the fantasy-filled kingdom of Ivalice, which sprung up in their town after Marche and friends opened an ancient magical tome. To set things right, you must build up your party by mastering abilities and summons, as well as learning the art of tactical combat to succeed.

WiiU_JoesDiner_02

Joe’s Diner for Wii U – You’re working the night shift to keep everything nice and orderly at a diner just off of Route 7. Now, if only the ghosts of two rival Native American chiefs upon whose grave site the diner was built would just rest in peace, everything would be copacetic.

WiiU_Level22_02

Level 22 for Wii U – Now this is interesting: I reviewed this a few years back when it came out for iPhone, and you can find that review here. One of my biggest grievances with this office stealth game was that “it simply calls for a level of precision that you’re not easily afforded on the device, thus turning a potentially fun and challenging game into an overly-frustrating affair.” Now that it’s on a system with actual controller inputs, I wonder if it’s any better.

WiiU_MiniGamesMadnessVolume1_03

Mini-Games Madness Volume: #1 – Hello World! for Wii U – This four-in-one title offers a time-management farming game, a board game for one or two players, a “highly addictive” arcade game called “Coptor,” and Cave Run – The Lost Gems Edition, which is described simply as “one of the best casual games you will play this year.”

It’s here! It’s finally here!

WiiU_XCX_SCRN_09

Xenoblade Chronicles X for Wii U – With Earth in ruin, mankind has taken to the stars and discovered a new home. Not all is well, however, as it was a rough landing — you don’t know the lay of the land or what awaits throughout this new world, and worse, there are survivors in stasis who need help if they’re to make it back to New Los Angeles and help restart human civilization.

I’ve been working at this one for a while now, and while I hoped to be ready for a pre-launch review, I’m not quite there yet — it’s just that damn immense (and I’ve been playing other titles alongside it). Without giving away too much, I’ll just say that it’s really good, but there are caveats to that.

WiiU_TraumaTeam_04

Trauma Team for Wii U – As you assume the role of six different medical professionals, you’ll need a steady hand with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controllers as you decide on the best course of action and make quick decisions to keep your patient’s vitals in stable condition.

Dementium Remastered for Nintendo 3DS – To take full advantage of what the Nintendo 3DS has to offer, this first-person survival horror game has been rebuilt from the ground up with enhanced graphics, high-quality audio, refined game play, and control options to make the experience more immersive.

Today is rather interesting — not a single new Nintendo 3DS game to be found! And I don’t mean the “New” Nintendo 3DS, I mean any new games for the system at all!

There is a puzzling bit regarding some Nintendo DSiWare games, and you can read about that below. On the bright side, there is a sale on the first wave of M2’s exquisite SEGA 3D Classics titles in the Nintendo 3DS eShop ($2.99 each!), so that may help make up for it.

WiiU_ArtAcademyHomeStudio_04

Art Academy: Home Studio for Wii U – 30 new art lessons allow you to hone your craft using the Wii U GamePad controller, then share it with the Miiverse! You can even post time-lapse videos of your work on YouTube. Plus, those who have Art Academy: SketchPad on their Wii U already can save $4 off the purchase of this title.

WiiU_NeverAlone_03

Never Alone (Kisima Ingitchuna) for Wii U – Developed in conjunction with the Native Alaskan people known as the Iñupiat, this atmospheric puzzle platformer is inspired by a traditional story which has been shared across generations. Exclusive to the Wii U version of this title are more than 20 in-game cultural artifacts which feature high-resolution images and background information taken from the archives of the Smithsonian Institute. You can check out a trailer here.

WiiU_Shiftlings_06

Shiftlings for Wii U – Two space janitors of questionable intelligence are joined by an air hose and charged with fixing problems while avoiding disaster in this puzzle platformer. One or two players can get in on the action as the duo must shift their size and weight between them to succeed. You can find a trailer here.

WiiU_VC_StarFoxCommand_03

Star Fox Command for Wii U – The final chapter in the saga begun by Star Fox 64, Star Fox Command features some strategy (good), multiple endings (very good), your choice of playable characters (really good), and controls almost entirely by the touch screen (not so good at all). I haven’t played this on the Wii U, but on the original Nintendo DS hardware, this really didn’t do it for me. And this comes from someone who enjoyed Kid Icarus Uprising.

WiiU_VC_MarioLuigiPartnersinTime_04

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time for Wii U – Time gets twisted as Mario and Luigi team up with their younger selves to take on the duo of Bowser, Baby Bowser, and the malicious alien Shroobs to save Princess Peach and Baby Peach!

This game tends to get a lot of hate from fans of Mario role playing games, but honestly? I liked it. While the story is a bit darker and arguably not as good as other entries in the series, I felt it was more playable than Superstar Saga, which is what mattered to me more in the long run. The controls felt more responsive, the timing was better, and moving around the map wasn’t as much of a hassle.

Of course, it’s not as good as the third entry in the series, Bowser’s Inside Story, but Partners in Time marks a good evolutionary step.

G.G. Series games for Nintendo DSiWare – Okay, this is an odd one. Nine more of these have been released today, but I’ve heard different things, from the games not being available on the Nintendo 3DS eShop (DSiWare only) to simply not being available in Canada. I checked this myself, and sure enough — the only G.G. Series games there were from 2011. I hunted and I used the search, and that’s all I came up with. As such, I’m hereby suspending further updates regarding these titles pending someone confirming that they are indeed available in some way in Canada.

Theme Shop on Nintendo 3DS

New themes this week include “Comic Workshop 2: My Workshop,” “Harvest Moon: Chicken,” “Harvest Moon: Cow,” “Harvest Moon: Dog,” “Harvest Moon: Horse,” and “Harvest Moon: Theme Bundle.”

Fortunately, you can share the adventure thanks to a special launch promotion that gives you a second code to gift to a friend! Check out the trailer here.

MegaManBattleNetwork4RedSun

Mega Man Battle Network 4 Blue Moon and Mega Man Battle Network 4 Red Sun for Wii U – This is where the Mega Man Battle Network series really tries to do something new, particularly with the two-versions strategy. Both games have the same core plot line, but the various stages and bosses between those portions are not only different between versions, but also change with each New Game + playthrough! Plus, Battle Chips and other items differ between versions as well.

WiiU_MegaManZero3_02b

Mega Man Zero 3 for Wii U – A surprise addition to the roster to wrap up the Mega May lineup, Mega Man Zero 3 is my personal favorite of the series. In truth, it probably most closely resembles the Mega Man X series with this installment, too, so there may be a correlation. The evil Dr. Weil has returned to Neo Arcadia with the legendary Reploid Omega, and it seems he may have the key to the missing part of Zero’s mysterious past.

Pokémon Shuffle Update – A new update to the game brings new stages and features, such as the “Super Catch Power” that makes catching ’em all easier than before. More details are available here just the same, though.

So this one is a bit late, as Nintendo decided to revamp their press site. Fortunately, they picked a pretty good, slow week to do so– perhaps even by design.

And yes, I could have just gotten the bare bones info from somewhere else, but if I can’t make this post to the standard I’ve set for myself (screens, page links, etc.), I’m not sure I’d even want to bother.

DSiWare_TitanicMystery_01

Constructed “with the same level of luxury and extravagance, but with modern day safety designs and up to date lifeboats,” someone is nonetheless not leaving this one to the icebergs and is planning to blow it up. Your job is to find the culprit by solving various puzzles and riddles through mini-games across the boat’s 30 locations.

If I may be honest, I find this idea a lot more intriguing now than when I began this write-up.

Wow, now this is an awesome week for the Nintendo Download. I hope no one minds if I espouse a little personal history with some of this week’s releases.

But first, a trailer for this week’s six huge releases that is a very nice throwback to when the series launched back in 1994:

Donkey Kong Country, Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest, and Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie’s Double Trouble for Wii U, and Donkey Kong Land, Donkey Kong Land 2, and Donkey Kong Land III for Nintendo 3DS – Six platforming adventures from Rare that were originally released for the Super NES and Game Boy, respectively, which followed the duos of Donkey & Diddy, Diddy & Dixie, and Dixie & Kiddy Kong (also respectively) as they sought to thwart the evil schemes of the dastardly King/Kaptain K. Rool and his legions of Kremlings. These are the titles which inspired the modern Donkey Kong Country titles from Retro Studios (see how you can get them for less in the eShop Sales below), though they play a bit differently from their successors.

On a personal note, I’ve been waiting for these releases for a long time, and I never expected them to come all at once. They were once on the Wii Shop Channel, but abruptly removed by Nintendo of America for reasons unknown; other regions at least had a little forewarning, but my wife and I were on a bus to New York City for the Wii U launch when the news came through. The worst part was we were actually looking at buying a then-inexpensive Wii for her mother and loading it up with all three Donkey Kong Country games, as she was a big fan of the series.

We had the first two ourselves, and had there been any sort of warning, we’d have snatched up the third. We have it for Super NES, but I’ve never beaten it; having it on Virtual Console would surely have helped, but at least now I have another chance. Fun Fact: According to an article from Kotaku UK, this game’s setting of the “Northern Kremisphere” was “modelled after the mountainous and forested regions of Northern Europe and Canada,” which is part of why I derived my choice of Weekly Deals visuals from this game.

As for Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy’s Kong Quest, I’ve long wanted to take advantage of the Wii U Virtual Console’s features for this one. I completed the game in its entirety, “102%,” in my youth, but I’ve apparently lost a step along the way, with Toxic Tower becoming a stopping point that’s not only thwarted myself, but my wife and our friends time and time again. Not this time! With the help Restore Points (which I only intend to use for that section), I fully intend to stomp a toxic mud hole in K. Rool’s @$$ and walk it dry.

Regarding the Game Boy Donkey Kong Land titles, I’ve only played the first one, as I hear the latter two are basically remixes of their respective Super NES counterparts. The first, however, includes a fair amount of original content, including one of my favorite worlds in a Donkey Kong game: Big Ape City, where the original Donkey Kong (now Cranky) took on Mario!

A few other fun bits before moving on: As noted above, the trailer Nintendo released today was inspired by the ad campaign for the original 1994 release of Donkey Kong Country, and you can see an example of that here.

Over on PoisonMushroom.Org, I’ve detailed some of the personal history with Donkey Kong Country and myself in my recounting of the Blockbuster World Video Game Championships, and I also wrote an article last year which casts Donkey Kong as Nintendo’s true hero of the 16-Bit Console Wars, rather than Mario. I hope you’ll enjoy those.

Moving on…

Squids Odyssey for Nintendo 3DS – This came to Wii U a few weeks ago, so here is what I had to say then: “Another from the iPhone, where it was known simply as “Squids.” This one had promise, but I advocated caution when I reviewed it. I haven’t played it since that review, nor the Wii U version, but hopefully they managed to improve on some aspects, while others– such as draining my phone’s battery like nobody’s business– shouldn’t apply here. According to the press release, though, this version contains not only the original iPhone game’s content, but also SQUIDS Wild West and additional new content as well.”

N3DS_BikeRiderDX2Galaxy_gameplay_02

Bike Rider DX2: Galaxy for Nintendo 3DS – “Japan’s No. 1 platformer” has you take your bike on a tour of 12 zodiac-inspired planets with more than 90 stages. Power-ups will allow you to fly or turn you into a frog as you avoid such obstacles as lasers, spiked blocks, and giant whirlwinds.

Holy moly, there are a lot of Nintendo eShop releases this week. There’s no time to waste, so let’s get right into it!

WiiU_Shovel_Knight_gameplay_2

Shovel Knight for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS – The long-awaited, Kickstarter-backed, retro-style project from Yacht Club Games is finally here! As the game’s hero, Shovel Knight, you’ll wield your mighty Shovel Blade as you embark on a journey to free the land from the evil Enchantress and her Order of No Quarter! The Wii U version features special Miiverse features, whereas the Nintendo 3DS version employs StreetPass for an exclusive Battle Arena.

I’m currently reviewing this for Nintendo Force, but without giving too much away, let me just say this: If you’re the sort of person who checks these updates in the hopes that a new NES, Super NES, or similarly oldschool game will be released on a given week, you really must play this.

Wii-U_Castlevania-III_gameplay_5

Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS – Many years before Simon Belmont picked up the whip known as the Vampire Killer and waged a one-man war against the forces of Dracula, his ancestor, Trevor, teamed up with a group of like-minded individuals to challenge the evil count through 17 levels filled with monsters of every shape and size. Joining him are Sypha Belnades, the spellcaster who controls both ice and flame; Grant DaNasty, a dagger-wielding pirate who can climb walls with the same ease as the rigging on his ship; and Alucard, the fan-favorite son of Dracula himself, whose fireball casting and transformative powers allow players a sense of… oh, who am I kidding? Everyone goes with either the pirate or the mage. Though this was Alucard’s first appearance in the series, he didn’t exactly impress anyone in it.

That notwithstanding, this is considered one of the better (but also most challenging) games in the series, following more in the footsteps of Castlevania than its sequel.

WiiU_WiiSportsClub_Golf_Screenshot_03

Mind, you only get 48 hours during that period to play from the time game play is initiated, so be sure you’re ready to make the most of it once it begins!

WiiU_MyArcticFarm_title_screen

My Arctic Farm for Wii U – Speaking of the arctic, here’s a farming-style game which takes place there, giving you a single little penguin to start, and allowing you to expand your frigid farmland to include up to ten different animals, including polar bears.

Yes, I know: Penguins are from the antarctic, not the arctic. Someone ought to tell the developers that, but it’s not going to be me; I like both penguins and polar bears too much to fuss over it.

WiiU_MyJurassicFarm_title_screen

My Jurassic Farm for Wii U – Same as above, but with less arctic, penguins, and polar bears and more dinosaurs, starting with a single Compsognathus.

This week has a surprising number of good games going for it. At least, I think it does…

WiiU_StreetFighterAlpha2_gameplay_02

Street Fighter Alpha 2 for Wii U – It’s amazing this game was ever released on the Super NES. Experience the entry which introduced the world to such techniques as Quick Move Reversals, Alpha Counters, and the Custom Combo System, as well as bringing Dan, Akuma, and M. Bison to the forefront of the action, where they are joined by Rolento, Gen, Sakura, Dhalsim, Zangief, and more.

WiiU_swords&soldiers_gameplay_03

Swords & Soldiers for Wii U – The aforementioned “I think” about the quality of some of this week’s releases applies here. I reviewed this one a while back for the iPhone, where it came as a highly recommended title. You can read that here, and hope that the same level of care and quality carried over to the Wii U version.

WiiU_SquidsOdyssey_gameplay_02

Squids Odyssey for Wii U – Another from the iPhone, where it was known simply as “Squids.” This one had promise, but I advocated caution when I reviewed it. I haven’t played it since that review, nor the Wii U version, but hopefully they managed to improve on some aspects, while others– such as draining my phone’s battery like nobody’s business– shouldn’t apply here. According to the press release, though, this version contains not only the original iPhone game’s content, but also SQUIDS Wild West and additional new content as well.

WiiU_FitMusic_gameplay_03

Fit Music for Wii U – It’s fitness! It’s dancing! “Each section offers all the typical phases of the workout with warm-up exercises, an intensive training phase and a final relaxation phase.”

megamanvscreenshots

Mega Man V for Nintendo 3DS – The fifth and final game from the Classic Mega Man series to grace the original Game Boy, the series goes out with a bang by offering an all-new adventure against all new bosses and other foes. When Mega Man’s Mega Buster proves ineffective against the attack of the Stardroids, Dr. Light gives the Blue Bomber’s attack a little extra punch– literally. With the new rocket-punching Mega Arm, Mega Man takes off to the eight planets (mind, this is before Pluto was declassified) to put a stop to their conquest. And he’s not alone: In addition to Rush and Eddie, Tango the Robocat makes his debut!

N3DS_AlienOnTheRun_gameplay_02

Alien on the Run for Nintendo 3DS – Full and demo versions of this title await in the Nintendo eShop. Ever think Earthlings are the only ones who have to worry about UFO abductions? Delude, an alien from another planet, would like to argue that point with you. He’s been taken from his home planet, and must dive into and take down the tractor beams he finds in the UFO’s 17 levels to get back home.

N3DS_TurtleTale_gameplay_02

Turtle Tale for Nintendo 3DS – It’s classic-style 2D platforming action as Shelldon the turtle defends his island home from Captain O’Haire and his gang of Monkey Pirates. Venture through five unique areas to win the day and make those pirates set sail for good!

WiiU_Adventuresoflolo_gameplay_06

Adventures of Lolo for Wii U – Before there was Kirby, HAL gave us Lolo and Lala (who would live on in tweaked forms in the tough cream puff’s own adventures). Lala, the love of Lolo’s life, has been kidnapped by the devilish King Egger and taken away to his great fortress. Lolo takes the fight to Egger, facing down his army of enemy forces by using the blocks found throughout the castle to his advantage, trapping some enemies and defending against others.

WiiU_ColorZen_gameplay_03

Color Zen for Wii U – Touting itself as a new kind of puzzle game, Color Zen wants you to plug in your headphones, relax, and immerse yourself as you try to find your way through its abstract world of colors and shapes. “There are no points or penalties for failure; just an abstract world of color to move through at your own pace.” 460 levels are included, with more promised.

megamanivscreens

Mega Man IV for Nintendo 3DS – Speaking of classics, this was the only Mega Man title I had on the Game Boy for years, and it remains one of the best on the platform. Wily has taken over the robots of the World Robot Expo, including some familiar faces, and it’s up to the Blue Bomber to put an end to their rampage. But before he can get to Dr. Wily, he must face the newest in the line of Mega Man Killers– Ballade!

N3DS_Moon Chronicles_gameplay_1a

Moon Chronicles for Nintendo 3DS – Renegade Kid’s award-winning scifi first-person shooter is back, and now it’s been remastered in 3D. Running at 60 frames per second, intuitive touchscreen controls help immerse you in the atmospheric adventure.

N3DS_ArcStyleBaseball3D_gameplay_01

N3DS_CandyMatch3_gameplay_02

Candy Match 3 for Nintendo 3DS – A match-3 game. There’s literally nothing more to say about it, except that you can also match-4, match-5, or match-6 candies for added bonuses.

DSi_DeepSeaCreatures_gameplay_01

Deep Sea Creatures for Nintendo 3DS/Nintendo DSiWare – Aboard your submarine, it’s your job to dive into the depths of the ocean, discover new creatures, and bring them back to shore with you. There, you can arrange them in your aquarium for their maximum benefit, and in time, they’ll even begin to reproduce!
