More Info on New Super Luigi U Downloadable Content

Following on the previous announcement of downloadable content for New Super Mario Bros. U, today’s Nintendo Direct has provided new information about New Super Luigi U.

New Super Luigi U: Wii U owners who purchase this downloadable content for New Super Mario Bros. U (a copy of the game is required) will get 82 updated stages and a new adventure featuring Luigi, who can jump higher than Mario, yet has trouble stopping after a dash. Many stages start with only 100 seconds on the timer, and quicker stages are populated with many obstacles. New Super Luigi U is scheduled to be released this summer during the Year of Luigi.

I’m not going to lie; the strict time limit has me a little bit nervous. It manages to work in the Coin Rush mode of New Super Mario Bros. 2, but at least you can pick up clocks there to extend your time. Still, Nintendo usually manages to balance it out pretty well, though I can never understand why they tend to place such constraints on players while at the same time urging them to explore.

Luigi having his own unique style is welcome, and the stages look neat so far– I just hope they aren’t too challenging. It’s still unfortunate, though, that Luigi doesn’t get his own story. Does that mean he rescues Princess Peach yet again? Why not Daisy? He shouldn’t have to settle for Mario’s girlfriend, especially in his own game during the “Year of Luigi.”

Regardless, I’m looking forward to giving this one a go. Curiously, however, Nintendo hasn’t mentioned whether or not it can use Boost Mode.
